2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Handling of concrete masonry products during loading, unloading and brick or block laying does not pose a health hazard.

Cutting, drilling, sawing and sanding of concrete masonry units can generate dust which may result in risk to human health if the dust is in a respirable form.

Short Term (Acute) Exposure.

Skin: May lead to dry or irritating skin.  May lead to dermatitis and sensitisation.
Eyes: Sharp fragments may irritate the eyes and cause inflammation.
Inhaled: Inhalation of dust particles may cause irritation to nasal and respiratory passages.
Swallowed: Possible gastrointestinal irritant.

Long Term (Chronic) Exposure.

Skin: May lead to dry or irritating skin, sensitisation and dermatitis.
Eyes: Sharp fragments may irritate the eyes and cause inflammation.
Swallowed: Possible gastrointestinal irritant.
Inhaled: Inhalation of dust particles may cause irritation to nasal and respiratory passages.

Prolonged exposure to respirable dust containing crystalline silica could lead to chronic respiratory diseases such as bronchitis, silicosis and lung cancer.  Studies have shown that smoking increases the risk of these diseases.

FIRST AID.

The following refers only to dust generated as above.

Skin: Wash with soap and water and apply a skin moisturiser.
Eyes: Flush eyes with clean running water for at least 15 minutes.  Seek medical assistance if discomfort persists.
Inhaled: Remove to fresh air; allow to rest.  If discomfort persists seek medical attention.
Swallowed: Drink plenty of fresh water.

First Aid Facilities :Washing facilities. Mobile eye wash facility with sterile or saline water.
Advice to Doctor: Treat symptomatically.

3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE EXPOSURE STANDARD

Applies to airborne dust.

Worksafe Australia Exposure Standards : Inspirable (inhalable) Dust 10 mg/m3 TWA
Respirable Quartz  0.2 mg/m3 TWA

ENGINEERED CONTROLS.

Provide adequate ventilation and/or local dust extraction or water spray where hardened concrete masonry is machined or worked and dust is produced.

PERSONAL PROTECTION.

Hands: Wear cloth or leather gloves to protect hands against abrasion.  Impervious gloves and apron should be worn when handling wet products.
Eyes: Wear AS/NZ 1337 approved glasses, goggles or face shield when dust is being generated during mechanical or manual degradation of concrete masonry such as cutting, drilling,
chasing, sanding and polishing.
Respiratory : Respiratory protection of Class P1 conforming to AS/NZ 1718 should be worn when the
dust generated exceeds exposure standards.

FLAMMABILITY.

Not flammable.  Not combustible.

4. SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION

STORAGE AND TRANSPORT

No special requirements.

SPILLS AND DISPOSAL.
